Punished! Grades 3-5 |
||
| When Logan accidentally
bumps into a strange old man in the library, he isn’t too worried
at the time when the elderly patron said he should be punished. But Logan
soon realizes that the punishment he receives is really an unusual curse – everything
he says comes out as a really bad pun. After tormenting his parents, friends
and teachers with his bad jokes, Logan knows he has to lift the curse,
and quickly. According to the strange man, there is only one way to break
the spell – Logan must go on a quest to collect seven oxymorons,
seven anagrams and seven palindromes or he will be forever pun-ished!
An excellent read-aloud for teachers introducing these language concepts and a fun and clever way for students to go on their own quests to discover real world examples of these wacky word combos known to the English language. “Watt” a delightful book! - Shana 11/06 |

The
Young Hans Christian Anderson Grades 4 and up/ Non-fiction |
||
Subject:
Hans Christian Anderson A charming, impressionistic biography of Hans Christian Andersen’s early life told through a series of short, chronological vignettes illustrated by the famous Danish artist Erik Blegvad. Nineteen short, episodic chapters explore pivotal experiences in Anderson’s childhood and illuminate the genesis of some of his well-known stories. Many of the vignettes are filled with tragedy and pathos. Less a traditional biography than a lyrical and emotional look at the life of one of Denmark’s most famous sons, this exquisite gem could be used by teachers of middle and upper grade students as a example of rich literary imagery. As a read-aloud, this book would be a moving account of the importance of overcoming obstacles and believing in oneself to achieve a full and rewarding life. Students familiar with Andersen’s tales will be particularly moved by this book; students who are not may find it a perfect introduction. - Guest Reviewer - Marcia from Carlthorp School 7/06 |
